So, major changes have happened lately. I have been dealing with moving out of my apartment for the past week and a half. It’s been very stressful. Basically, ever since one of my roommates moved out, there’s been trouble within the house over the lease and a couple of bills. It’s nothing to be worried about. There were just a couple of times when I didn’t think my roommates would pull through in paying their end. Plus, the roommate that left had the lease under her name so we had to figure out what to do about everything and if I needed to pay a security deposit now. Everything is okay and it’s not like I have to pay anybody anything. But I feel like this would be a good time to get out just in case something else hits the fan.
So I’m moving out tonight. Dad is picking me up on his way from the airport. I might have to come back for a couple of stuff but that’s alright. I will also be coming back and forth from SR to SF because I still want to find a job here. I called the EKG place once again asking them for my certificate and apparently they didn’t charge me right for the last time they used my credit card and I had to pay them an extra $25 because of a late fee that I paid when I had to pay the initial deposit. I gave them an earful for not letting me know until now, especially since the person I talked to last week said my certificate was ready to be sent to me. Anyway, the certificate is already in the mail and I have an electronic copy just in case.
As I said, I will still look for a job and a new place to live in the city. I don’t expect nor do I want you guys to pay for the rent for the new place. I gave my roommates my 30 day notice, which still means that I have to pay a partial amount for next month’s rent. So the apartment is still mine for a while and I’ll use it for when I am here for interviews and for when I’m trying to save up for the new apartment.
I did get the letter from SVA, finally. Personally, I thought the welcoming package would be a lot more fun than just a roster of the faculty – like, seriously, what makes them think I care about that right now? I don’t think I’m ready yet financially to attend their classes for this coming fall, especially since I have missed the boat on financial aid and on the big scholarship they offer. But I will talk to them tomorrow and find out if I can defer my admission to the next semester. I think that I would be able to raise enough money to move there and start school if I get a job and work until the end of the year.
Things have happened in the other areas of my life but they’re currently not as important as this.
Thank you for sending rent money for next month. I obviously won’t be paying it in full but I will still need to pay part of it because I did give them my 30 day notice only a few days ago. Thank you also for sending allowance and food. Thank you also for all the congratulations for the letter. I know I have been very quiet lately and I’m sorry. I have just been too stressed about leaving the apartment and leaving San Francisco for a while. I’m also very sad that I might have to stop the chorus for a while and I totally don’t think you understand how much it means to me so I don’t want to talk about it. I just really can’t talk about all of this. I just need to work on getting a job, following through on the commitments I made and then I can relax enough to go on from that.

Update no. 17 11:35 AM
Hello Parents,
Well, as you already know, I am done with my EKG course and will have to venture onto working in a hospital. But first, I have to wait for them to actually give me my certificate. They said they will give it around 2 weeks after my tuition is paid in full. That payment, by the way, is due this Saturday. I hope you remembered that.
Until then, I am reviewing or the National Accreditation test for which there will be one scheduled this coming March. They said they didn’t know the actual schedule for the test but I do know who to contact in order to find out. That test is not a requirement for employment but it would be a big help as I move to New York.
My teacher did advise me to get a volunteer position before looking for actual employment. He said that I would be okay if I clocked in around 100 hours. The school that the course was in doesn’t have an official externship for EKG technicians but I know the number of the person in charge of externships. I will be contacting her on Monday. Also, there is a person in the chorus who works in UCSF and handles externships for a different department.
I still haven’t heard from SVA and I am very sad about it. I think that what I will do is just focus on getting a job and then saving up enough money to move to NY, with or without school. And I will reapply if I have to. I just want to be clear on something: I have no plans of not going to SVA. Things are just looking like they’ve been set back a little, and that’s okay.
I don’t know exactly when I’ll move but I do remember calculating that I would need around $6000 to move to New York seamlessly. But I might be able to do move there for less. So I will work here until I make that money. However, several other scenarios might occur, i.e. SVA saying that I can just start next spring. And I’ll just adjust my plans to fit that accordingly.
Now, I have become extremely busy with the chorus. Until March 6, I will be rehearsing 3 to 4 nights a week. And since I didn’t pay for this retreat and my tuxedo with cash, I will have to do some volunteer hours so that I can still stay in the chorus and not owe them a bunch of money. I’m trying to see if I can get them to clock in the hours that I spent on designing for them. Don’t worry, all of this works out very nicely and I still have time to work on EKG.
As for my own personal work, it did take a short break right after retreat and coming back in with all the stress of “what to do now” but it is coming back on track nicely and even pushing forward. I have stopped the “A Week Inspired” posts because they just were getting too tedious and for not very much return. I just don’t think that it was very relevant to anybody and so it started becoming not worth all that effort. But I still think that having some sort of journalistic effort and then translating that to design is a very beneficial endeavor. So I’m just going to figure out how to make that more relevant to my audience and re-launch it later.
I will be spending a good chunk of today and hopefully some of this weekend to figure out some schedule/workflow/timeframe as to how to progress and promote myself as a designer/artist. I'm thinking like launching a Facebook Fan Page. That way I can easily monitor my interaction with my audience. I just feel that this is even more important now that I might have to take some time to just raise money.
Thank you for the patience until I have formally made up my mind as to how to progress from here. Also, thank you for the allowance money that was sent last week. I also heard from mom that she might be sending my rent money this coming Monday so thank you in advance for that.
I’m reminding you guys again that the deadline for the last payment of the EKG course is this Saturday. It is going to be $150.
Since I am trying to clock in a lot more volunteer hours for the chorus, I have become part of a fundraising effort that happens during my rehearsals. The only thing required out of me is for me to buy a purse. It should be very cheap, I don’t imagine spending over $20 on it. But I you can please send an allowance of $50 and a little more for the purse, that would be very, very, awesome.
Thank You,
D’ken

Update no. 16 4:57 PM
Hello Parents,
So now I am done with the EKG course. What now? Well, now it's time to study for the accreditation exams. I have to to study for but they're by all means not required for me to start looking for work here in San Francisco. My teacher did tell me to look for volunteer positions in hospitals nearby before I actually get employed. His recommendation is 100 hours, which is really not much at all. However, I will have to wait for my certificate to come in the mail before I can start applying. In the meantime though, I do have a reviewer for one of the accreditation exams and I will start working on that as I'm waiting for my certificate.
There's quite a lot happening in the chorus. Like I said, I'm learning music for 3 different concerts - our first one happening in less than a month. I just finished retreat, which was really great. We sung Single Ladies a whole lot. But now it's crunch time so I will have to spend a lot of time listening to rehearsal files and memorizing music.
As for my own personal work, I had to put it on hold for a while because of retreat but I'm slowly coming back into my groove. I am going to get a lot of more public work because the chorus is slowly using me more and more to design for them. I will also might have to design some stuff for my internship. If I get more responsibility in regards towards something that I'll be able to use later on, I will stay with the internship for as long as I can.
Thank you for all your help so I could go to retreat this weekend. I do want you to know that when I took my final that weekend, I got a perfect score, despite being in retreat. I would need $100 for food/allowance for as soon as you can send it.
I know the plan for what is happening next isn't as clear as it can be and I do need a little more time figuring it out. I will give it a lot more thought and will give you guys a much clearer picture of what needs to happen in the next couple of months.

Update no. 15 11:19 PM
Hello Parents,
So first off, thank you for arranging my finances for the coming weeks. I got the money yesterday and I’ll be heading out to Santa Rosa tomorrow.
This weekend is going to be my last lecture for the EKG class. I will be driving down from retreat Saturday for my last lecture and for my final exam. I have studied and have gotten perfect scores in all the quizzes so far, which included another one I just did last weekend.
On Sunday will be my actual last day for the course. All we’re going to do is perform stress tests on each other. I will have the payment due on the 5th paid tomorrow. The next and final payment for the EKG course is due on the 20th and it will cost $150. My teacher’s recommendation is to find a volunteer position and clock in around 100 hours before looking for actual employment. I will also need to try for the accreditation exam for California and another National Accreditation Exam so I can work in New York.
A lot is happening in the chorus. Other than retreat this weekend, my nearest event is a concert on March 6th doing music written for movie soundtracks. It will be with a small ensemble and it would be great if Dad and Philip could come down and celebrate our Moving Anniversary then. We’re also doing another concert after that performing “Rock” Music. I just might be the one in charge for designing the poster, but I’m not sure. And after that, I will be on tour with them to go to places like Fresno and Bakersfield.
I’m still doing my personal art and just keep chugging on with that. I might have to cut down on the blog because it’s starting to lose quality and I’m not sure how I can keep it relevant. But I will still continue on with my project where I design something everyday. I’ll figure out how to keep myself practicing my craft and keep producing more stuff.
Anyway, that is all. Like I said, I will be in Santa Rosa starting Thursday and retreat starts Friday to Sunday. Thank you again for the money you guys sent. I will send another report in a week.

Update no. 14 1:29 PM
Hello Parents,
So this new schedule is working out fine for me. I have adjusted much better since the deadline has been pushed to Wednesday. I am doing well for the EKG class - another quiz, another perfect score. Actually, I even got some extra credit. There’s only two more weeks left and for the last week, I will be driving up and down from Santa Rosa because of Retreat. I have already talked to my instructor about it and we have made the necessary arrangement. Not that there’s much to change. That last week will only be our final and having a practical try on taking a stress test.
There’s still no word from SVA although I should be expecting one very soon.
This week I’m working more than the usual for the internship. I’m not sure if I’ll be needed for the big event happening tomorrow but I hope I still could go. Although it wouldn’t be a disaster if I was going to be absent. That just means more rest for me.
A couple things are happening with the chorus. Like I have sort of mentioned before, retreat is coming up next weekend. I had a helping hand in designing the handbook. We are learning all new material for our Rockaria! Concert. I still have that Movie Soundtracks concert coming up in March and rehearsal is tonight.
Things are still going well for my personal work. I’m consistently getting more and more recognition from other artists about my work. And these are clever people who are more or less doing the same thing so it feels good to get some praise from them.
All in all, not much new to report but I’m being very productive.
Thank you for the food and allowance that I got although I still kinda need more. And thank you so much for returning the Netflix. I am excited to get the new batch either today or tomorrow.
A few things are coming up: I will need some money for the bus pass next month. Rent and the payment for the EKG class is due on the 5th, which is next Friday.
Again, Thank You,
D’ken

Update no. 13 5:21 PM
Hello Parents,
I’m sorry this letter is coming to you late. I have been having trouble adjusting to the new schedule and trying to get into a sleeping pattern that gives me the best kind of working time. I was going to send a report yesterday but I have been trying to figure out how to do deal with this first. But enough with the excuses. I do have a solution, which I will explain later.
First off, I’m sure you’ll be glad to know that I am at the top of my EKG class. I have been impressing the teacher with very thoughtful questions, which in turn have contributed to the lectures. I also received a perfect score at the quiz given last Saturday. It accounts for around 15-20% of the “grade.” The information overload has slowed down since we’re now looking at the basic arrhythmias. I have been practicing a bit here in there throughout the week. We have another quiz on Sunday.
Not much going on with the chorus and the internship. The chorus is going on tour for its first leg next Saturday. I wont be going because of class but I do have concerts starting on March and I will be going on tour throughout California on April. My internship tells me they’re trying to get me to have more responsibility just as soon as they’ve finished reorganizing from the post-auction work they have to do. I have decided to just stay along with the internship as much as I can until something more important comes up that conflicts with the schedule or the workflow. We have an event next Thursday promoting the organization at the Supperclub.
A lot of exciting things have been going on with my personal work. The commitment to design something everyday has gotten me a lot of talk and a lot of practice. More designs have been featured at that popular website and some of the people whose work I admire have become my contacts on flickr. I’m not going to do anything else about that right now because I’m still adjusting towards this new schedule and will have to again after class and I still believe that I need more work under my belt to have a good body of work.
Having said that, Dad talked to me a few days ago about sending 3 photographs for large order print a week and I don’t think I can make that commitment yet. However, I still am interested and I will most likely take that project on after I am done with the EKG class.
So, as for the solution to my little predicament, I have just decided to move around the workflow of things. The blog and the parent report will be updated on Wednesday instead of Sunday. Sundays after class is just brutal for me and throws me off just trying to design 3 things and write the letter. It unbalances all the work I have tried to do since Wednesday to get into a regular sleep schedule. So I’m just changing it so I can return to being a little more consistent.
Thank you for the payment of the class. The next payment due is on the 5th, which is also the due date of my rent. Thank you also for the extra money to print out all the music and some of the lecture slides and for food and allowance.
I would like to ask for food and allowance again because I used quite a lot of that money to buy new sweaters and an umbrella. I accidentally put the old sweaters in the wet wash so they all shrunk way too much. Only two survived.
Oh, and if you can also return the Netflix so I can have some DVD's to watch. I'm kind of researching old films so I can get a better perspective on their aesthetic for my work. Plus, it's kind of a very inexpensive way to be entertained.
Thank you,
D’ken

Update no. 12 3:30 PM
Hello Parents,
So this past weekend was my first weekend for the EKG course. It was a very intensive weekend but nothing beyond my ability. It’s a lot of information just dumped onto the students but the teacher is good and makes sure we actually understand the information. He’s a hiring manager for a local hospital too so he has a lot of good advice to give the students.
Everything else, the chorus and the art, are still going on as they were. I did get into the small ensemble and I will have a concert this coming March.
A couple of my work has been featured on a website called flickrdesign.com.
There really isn’t anything new that I can update you guys with. I have just been very busy. The only days I have for myself are Tuesday and maybe Thursday. But being this busy actually feels good so I’m not complaining.
Thanks for the money to pay the course. I got the sort of payment plan they have me on and they will be charging my card $300 on every 5th and 20th starting next week.
I kind of need food and allowance. And also, I have a lot of stuff to print out from both the EKG course and the chorus. So can you please send $50 so I can print it and buy binders to keep them in.
Thank You,
D’ken
